What is an agentic worker?

By Agentic Workers · Published

Agentic worker (noun)

An agentic worker is an AI agent assigned a recurring job. It has written instructions, connected tools with limited permissions, a trigger or schedule, and a person who reviews its results. A chatbot waits for each prompt; an agentic worker carries out the job each time it runs.

The five parts of an agentic worker

An AI agent becomes an agentic worker when all five of these are defined. If one is missing, you have a demo or an assistant, not a worker you can rely on.

  1. A job

A named, recurring piece of work with a result someone can check, such as “prepare the Monday pipeline summary.” An open-ended request like “help with sales” is not a job.

  2. Instructions

The goal, the sources to use, the format of the result, and the conditions under which the worker should stop and ask a person.

  3. Tools and permissions

The specific accounts and actions the worker can use, such as reading a CRM or drafting an email. It has access only to what it is given.

  4. A trigger or schedule

What starts each run: a time, an incoming message, a new file, or a request from a person.

  5. A reviewer and a record

A person who owns the result, approves consequential actions, and can see what the worker did on each run.

Agentic worker vs. chatbot, copilot, and workflow automation

How an agentic worker compares with a chatbot, a copilot, and workflow automation
TypeWhat starts the workHow it decidesToolsRuns on its own
ChatbotA person sends a promptAnswers one prompt at a timeUsually none, or a few built inNo
CopilotA person working in an appSuggests; the person actsThe host applicationNo
Workflow automationA fixed triggerFollows steps defined in advanceConfigured integrationsYes
Agentic workerA schedule, event, or requestChooses steps toward a defined resultConnected tools with set permissionsYes

Use workflow automation when the rules are fixed and explicit. Use an agentic worker when the job requires reading varied input or choosing the next step, and you can check the result.

Examples of agentic workers

These are illustrations of the definition, not measured customer results.

  • Each Monday, read last week’s closed deals from the CRM and draft a pipeline summary for the sales lead to review.
  • When a support email arrives, categorize it, find the relevant help article, and draft a reply for a person to approve.
  • Each morning, collect new mentions of a client’s brand and post a short digest to the team channel.

What an agentic worker is not

An agentic worker is not an employee and does not take responsibility for its output. It can misread instructions, use incomplete information, or produce a wrong answer. Give it the smallest set of permissions the job needs, require approval for consequential actions, and test it on real examples from your process before expanding its access.

Frequently asked questions

Is an agentic worker the same as an AI agent?
Every agentic worker is an AI agent, but not every AI agent is an agentic worker. The term describes an agent that has been given a defined, recurring job, the tools for that job, and a person responsible for reviewing it.
What is an agentic workforce?
An agentic workforce is a set of agentic workers, each assigned a different job, that a business runs alongside its staff. Each worker still needs its own instructions, permissions, and reviewer.
Can an agentic worker replace an employee?
An agentic worker can take on specific recurring tasks. It does not take responsibility for decisions, relationships, or accountability the way an employee does, and its results need review. Compare the tasks within a role before making a staffing decision.
What is the difference between “agentic workers” and Agentic Workers?
Lowercase, “agentic workers” is the general term defined on this page. Agentic Workers is a platform for building, scheduling, and running agentic workers with connected tools, approvals, and run history.
